FREE VAT CALCULATOR

VAT calculator.
Add it or take it out.

Free. No signup. Runs in your browser.

Amount and rate

Calculation
UK standard rate 20%, reduced 5%, zero 0% (gov.uk/vat-rates). Use your own country’s rate.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to Angelwood or stored on a server.

Result

Total including VAT: £1,200.00

Net (excluding VAT)
£1,000.00
VAT
£200.00
Gross (including VAT)
£1,200.00

A calculation aid, not tax advice. Which rate applies depends on what you sell and where; check with HMRC or your accountant.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose the Calculation: Add VAT or Remove VAT.
  2. Enter the amount: the Amount before VAT (net) to add VAT, or the Amount including VAT (gross) to remove it.
  3. Set the VAT or sales tax rate, for example 20% for the UK standard rate.
  4. Pick your currency and read the net amount, the VAT and the gross total.

How to calculate VAT

  • Add VAT: VAT = net × rate; gross = net + VAT.
  • Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = gross − net.

Don’t remove VAT by subtracting 20% of the gross: that gives the wrong answer. Divide by 1.2 instead. The tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Angelwood or saved on a server.

Worked example

£1,000 of consulting plus 20% VAT is £1,200. Working backwards, a £1,200 VAT-inclusive total is £1,200 ÷ 1.2 = £1,000 net and £200 VAT.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

Talk to us
How do I work out VAT backwards?

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.2; the difference is the VAT.

Do I have to charge VAT?

Only if you’re registered for VAT. In the UK you must register once your VAT-taxable turnover passes the threshold set by HMRC; check the current threshold on GOV.UK.

Can I use this for sales tax or GST?

Yes. Enter the rate that applies to you; the maths is the same. It’s a calculation aid, not tax advice.
