What to ask interior design clients

An interior design questionnaire helps you understand how a client lives or works in a space, their taste and their budget before the first concept. Follow it with an interior design proposal once you’ve seen the space.

MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU

Useful structure.
Your way of working.

01

Ask only what you’ll use.

Every extra question lowers completion. Keep the ones that change what you’ll do, and move the rest to a later conversation.

02

Explain why you’re asking.

A one-line reason next to a question gets better answers than an unexplained field.

03

Act on the answers.

Review responses before your next conversation and turn them into requests with owners and dates.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you download.

Talk to us
What questions should an interior designer ask a client?

How the space is used, what doesn’t work, style likes and dislikes, what to keep, budget for fees and goods, timeline and who decides.

Should I ask about budget in the questionnaire?

Yes. Asking early avoids designing something the client can’t afford. Ask about fees and goods separately.

Questionnaire or consultation?

Both. The questionnaire prepares the consultation, which is where you test answers against the space itself.

Can I edit this template in Word or Google Docs?

Yes. Download the Word (.docx) file and open it in Microsoft Word, or upload it to Google Drive and choose Open with → Google Docs. There’s also a Markdown version for any text editor. No account or email address is needed.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Fill it in, then export it: File → Save As → PDF in Word, or File → Download → PDF document in Google Docs. On this page you can also print just the template or save it as a PDF from your browser’s print dialog.
